Paigaldasin oma arvutisse Windows XP (testimise eesmärgil, virtuaalmasinasse ja igati ausalt saadud litsentsivõtmega, aga mitte sellest ei tahtnud ma praegu kirjutada).

Kaine peaga kirjutatud tarkvara paigaldajale esitatakse vajadusel sissejuhatuseks mõned küsimused ning seejärel antakse teada, kas ta jõuab ainult kohvil ära käia või võib paar saiakest ka kõrvale võtta. Aga Windowsi installer nõuab lisateavet paigaldusprotsessi keskel. Idioodid.

Noh, sain käki lõpuks käima ja Windows pakkus mulle kohe automaatseid uuendusi. Lasin tal need alla sikutada ja viskasin pilgu peale, et mida uut mulle siis Redmondist saadetakse. Tohhoo tonti — kõigepealt paigaldatakse Internet Explorer 6 otsa terve rida turvauuendusi ja siis visatakse IE6 lihtsalt minema ja pannakse seitsmes versioon asemele. Traaaa!

Microsoft opens up Office binary file formats

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office binary file formats (doc, xls, ppt) under Microsoft Open Specification Promise, which effectively says: “We will never assert our patent claims against you for making, using, selling, offering for sale, importing or distributing implementations of the covered specifications.”

Indeed, these file formats are pretty complicated (it takes more than 200 pages to spec the Word .doc file format; Joel Spolsky explains why). But releasing them into the open means that the makers of OpenOffice and other alternatives will have a legal way of properly supporting these formats — and that they will probably get a lot of user pressure to implement this support.

Ajakirjanikud Microsofti luti otsas

Lugu järgmine:

Mõned Vene ajakirjanikud harrastavad sõnavabadust.
Vene võimud algatavad 20 kriminaalasja ajakirjanike ja väljaannete vastu, kes väidetavalt piraattarkvara pruugivad.
Rahvusvaheline Ajakirjanike Liit (IFJ) pöördub Microsofti poole palvega annetada 3500 kõige vaesemale Vene meediaettevõttele tasuta tarkvaralitsentsid kokku 35 tuhande arvuti jaoks ning kehtestada ülejäänutele kolme aasta jooksul soodushinnad.

Lutti võetakse üldiselt kas sellepärast, et meeldib, või sellepärast, et peab. Siiski on olemas ka kolmas võimalus — võetakse sellepärast, et ei teata, et ei pea.

FON loobus Microsofti tarkvarast, kolis Ubuntule

Maailma suurima wifi-kogukonna FON asutaja ja tegevjuht Martin Varsavsky saatis oma töötajaile e-kirja, kus teatas, et FON lõpetab Microsofti uute tarkvaralitsentside ostmise ja vanade uuendamise ning palus kõigil esimesel võimalusel Ubuntu Linuxile ümber kolida. Üks väljavõte Martini kirjast (minu tõlge):

“Ubuntut kasutades unustasin arvuti ja sain keskenduda oma tööle. Windowsiga, mis oma kokkujooksmiste ja uimasusega oma olemasolu mulle liigagi sageli meelde tuletas, ei olnud see võimalik. Teine ülemineku põhjus on kokkuhoid. Ubuntu ja kõik selle juurde kuuluv tarkvara on tasuta ning lisaks tarkvarale võimaldab see meil raha säästa ka riistvara arvelt, sest Ubuntu jookseb 2 aasta vanusel arvutil kiiremini kui Vista tuttuuel.”

Microsoft sues Estonia

Tallinn, 04.05.07. Microsoft (MSFT) has initiated litigation against the Republic of Estonia whose prime minister’s actions have led to violent rioting during which numerous windows were broken beyond repair. “We consider this as a direct action against our good reputation on global markets,” an anonymous source within the Redmond software giant said. Microsoft would apparently accept an out-of-court arrangement whereby the government of Estonia replaces all broken windows first, and then upgrades all windows in the country to Vista.

Apple waiting to fall… on Microsoft

I’m not the only one who thinks Mac OS X is a skin on Unix — an amazingly good one indeed, but still effectively a skin. And although Apple is damn good at building software, the company’s approach has grown from the idea that the business is in selling hardware. Now if (notice that I didn’t say “when”) they decide to let their hardware business dwindle away, they might be able to pull this skin onto another BSD core, and make it a Mac OS x86.

Short-sighted stock markets

Stock markets were once meant to allow the bright meet the rich. By bringing together people who had bright ideas and no or little money with people who had some money for which they couldn’t think of any other use, the markets allowed enterprises to be founded and expanded.

Back then, investors invested in companies. They bought shares in anticipation of receiving a piece of the company’s future profits. And they usually had at least a rough idea about the business “their” companies were in.
